RomeWar is a free browser-based game from the distant year 2006, which was completely revamped in 2018. The game features strategic elements and a conflict between two peoples: the Romans and the Gauls. The action takes place, as you may have guessed, during the times of the Roman Empire. Historical games have an advantage over their fantasy counterparts. Immersing yourself in the past, feeling like a commander and a part of history, or even imagining yourself in Caesar's place—these are entirely different impressions and emotions compared to playing in a fictional world. So, what makes this game special?
In this RomeWar overview, I should add that the developers have imposed audience restrictions: the game is off-limits to children and people with unstable mental health. There is even a "security system" (captcha) that is supposedly difficult to bypass. So keep that in mind!
Now, about the gameplay
Registration is simple and straightforward. When choosing your character, you select which side you will play for (Roman or Gaul), as well as your gender.
The game features a mentor system, so you will need a mentor. But most likely, they will find you on their own and take care of everything. Though, in all honesty, you only need them for a short period. The game is not difficult, and you get into it quickly. During the tutorial quests, you will become familiar with the combat system, visit the market, explore a dungeon, and collect treasure chests. After the tutorial, you are sent to the main city of Alesia. This is where your work begins: mining resources, trading, blacksmithing, farming, construction, and so on. You can work as a mercenary or fish in the lake, or you can commit robberies and search for chests. All of this will help you get rich. For all your actions, items, and goods, you receive money, which you can then invest in further development. The economic side of the game is well-developed and thought out down to the smallest details. There are tons of opportunities to earn money.
Battles
Battles in the game are turn-based. Fights are divided into rounds. They can be either in 2D or 3D. Clan battles are one of the key aspects of RomeWar. You can join a clan (if you play as a Gaul) or join a legion (if you play as a Roman). You can invite friends or play with random people. Leveling up your character is much easier this way, and you will also have the opportunity to participate in tournaments, city battles, and conflicts in provinces, at sea, and on islands.
Concluding this RomeWar overview, I'd like to add that the game is not difficult, but that doesn't mean all your actions will happen on autopilot. You need to think through your game tactics and strategy: how to develop your character, which path to take, who to rob, and who it's better to be close friends with. Your character's future fate depends on all your decisions.
The review of RomeWar is coming to an end, but before you go play, you should take a look at the minimum and recommended system requirements of RomeWar.
