Rust is the brainchild of Facepunch Studios. The core concept of the game is survival. Much like DayZ, Minecraft, or S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Rust takes place in an extremely hostile environment where you must strive not just to survive, but perhaps even to thrive.
I Will Survive!
The primary goal of the game is to carve out a place for yourself, starting with nothing but a rock in your hand. To do this, you’ll need to gather various resources. For instance, you can obtain wood from trees or woodpiles, while minerals and ores can be harvested from large boulders. You can then craft more advanced tools—combining wood and stone, for example, allows you to create an axe, which makes gathering materials much faster.
You will also need food. You can hunt the various animals found in the game; bears and wolves pose a significant threat to new players, while boars, chickens, rabbits, and deer will simply flee from you. Once you’ve killed an animal, you can harvest resources like meat and hide from its carcass. You can then build a campfire using wood and cook the meat—providing you with a decent meal and a better chance of survival.
I Want to Live!
When reviewing Rust, it’s important to highlight the primary dangers. You will face two main threats: the environment itself and other people.
Since Rust is a multiplayer game, you should be more concerned about other players—who are also struggling to survive—than about the animals. Unfortunately, they might try to survive at your expense: they could discover your shelter, attempt to kill you, and make off with all your belongings. Fortunately, you have the means to defend yourself and stand up to these bandits. It is best to befriend other players and help each other survive. The world of RUST is teeming with dangers, so you would do well to find some companions.
The game’s environment is extremely hostile. Bears and wolves will hunt you down and, if they catch you, they will certainly kill you. Falling from a great height leaves you no chance of survival. Exposure to radiation is also ill-advised—you risk becoming a walking corpse. Starvation or hypothermia can likewise kill you quite quickly.
What is Rust?
The game began as a clone of DayZ. The developers liked the concept behind DayZ, but were quite disappointed when they actually tried playing it. They decided they could create a similar game in less than a month. Four months later, we had Rust. As we continue this overview of Rust, it is worth sharing what the developers themselves have to say.
From the developers:
"It became quite clear that while DayZ featured a vast, populated world, we couldn't justify the time investment required to build large and small towns, various structures, furniture, and so on. We decided that the world should be empty, and that users should build these structures themselves. Joining a different server is like entering an entirely different world; as a result, the game can evolve in completely different ways.
Around that time, we also realized that we were tired of zombies. After taking a closer look at the game, we decided we didn't even need them—there are already plenty of ways to die. Consequently, the vast majority of zombies were removed from the game, leaving only a few behind."
