Executive Producer Matt Zitterman and Senior Art Director John Mueller shared the first details regarding the development of the next installment in the franchise during an interview with Korean media.
According to the creators, the team's primary goal is to craft the best story campaign in the series' history. The game takes place 100 years after the defeat of Mephisto. The plot focuses on the total dominance of the forces of evil, leaving no safe cities in Sanctuary and forcing surviving heroes to lead a nomadic existence.
Key gameplay and narrative innovations:
- Caravan system: A mobile caravan camp will be a central game mechanic; players will develop it and recruit key story characters as they progress.
- "Plague Knight" class: Developers confirmed the introduction of this new archetype. Conceptually, the class is a warrior who wields the powers of darkness to combat evil. The full list of starting classes has not yet been revealed.
- Progression and endgame: Game difficulty will scale gradually. Access to high-level (endgame) content will only unlock in the later stages, departing from the practices of previous installments.
- Franchise legacy: Blizzard intends to draw upon the experience of all previous games in the series and integrate the most successful mechanics—those that resonated positively with the community—into Diablo V.
- Diablo V was officially announced at BlizzCon 2026. The game is scheduled for release in the spring of 2029.
At the same time, the developers announced that no further major content expansions are planned for Diablo IV, as the studio is focusing on the production of the fifth installment. However, support for the current game will continue, with the next season launching tomorrow.
